There Are Actually These Tricks to Tax Refunds, Did You Know?
Recently, many people have been discussing the topic of tax refunds, as if it were an unexpected windfall from heaven. But what exactly is a tax refund, and why does it occur? Today, let’s delve deeper into this topic and uncover the mystery behind tax refunds.
A tax refund, simply put, is when the tax authority returns the overpaid taxes to the taxpayer. This is not a generous gift from the tax authority but a reasonable adjustment based on the tax system. In our daily tax payment process, due to various reasons, there may be situations where prepaid taxes exceed the actual tax liability.
Take individual income tax as an example. For comprehensive income such as wages, salaries, labor remuneration, royalties, and the use of proprietary rights, taxes are prepaid during the year. At the end of the year, a final settlement is conducted. If the prepaid taxes exceed the annual tax liability, a tax refund will occur. For instance, Mr. Zhang, in addition to his salary from his main job, also earned labor remuneration through part-time work. When receiving the labor remuneration, the payer withheld individual income tax at a rate of 20%. However, during the annual settlement, based on his total annual income, the applicable tax rate was lower than 20%, resulting in overpaid taxes and thus a tax refund.

- Insufficient deductions for special additional expenses: Currently, we have special additional deductions such as children's education, continuing education, major medical expenses, home loan interest, housing rent, and elderly support. If the relevant information is not reported in time during the year, leading to insufficient enjoyment of these deductions, the deductions can be supplemented during the annual settlement, potentially resulting in a tax refund. For example, Ms. Li, due to oversight, did not report the special additional deduction for children's education in the first half of the year and only reported it in the second half. During the annual settlement, she supplemented the deduction for the first half, ultimately resulting in a tax refund.
- Annual comprehensive income below 60,000 RMB but with prepaid individual income tax: Some people have unstable incomes, with higher income in certain months leading to prepaid taxes, but their total annual income is below 60,000 RMB, which can also result in a tax refund. For example, Xiao Wang had a busy start to the year with higher income and prepaid individual income tax, but his business slowed down in the second half, resulting in an annual income below 60,000 RMB. During the annual settlement, he could apply for a tax refund.
- Insufficient deductions due to mid-year employment changes, resignation, or months without income, leading to insufficient enjoyment of the standard deduction of 60,000 RMB, special deductions for "three insurances and one fund," special additional deductions for children's education, enterprise (occupational) annuities, commercial health insurance, and tax-deferred pension insurance: For instance, Mr. Zhao changed jobs mid-year and had several months without income, resulting in insufficient deductions. During the annual settlement, a recalculation could lead to a tax refund.
Currently, tax refund applications are primarily processed through the Individual Income Tax App. First, download and log in to the app, then find the "Key Service Recommendations" section on the homepage and click "Annual Comprehensive Income Settlement." Next, follow the system prompts to fill in income, deduction items, and other information. The system will automatically calculate the refundable amount. Finally, click "Apply for Refund" and select the bank card for the refund. After the tax authority reviews and approves, the refund will be deposited into the designated bank account.
Applying for a tax refund is not complicated. Understanding the relevant policies and procedures makes it easy to handle. When encountering a tax refund situation, we should actively apply according to the regulations to ensure our rightful benefits are protected. At the same time, it reminds us to pay more attention to tax policies, report deduction items accurately and timely, and avoid overpaying taxes. We hope everyone can clearly understand their tax refund situation and reasonably enjoy tax benefits.
