How much is the import agency fee usually? Does anyone know?
I’m about to start an import business recently and have no prior experience with import agency fees, so I’m not very clear about the market rates. Could anyone tell me how much the import agency fee usually is? Is it charged as a fixed amount or as a percentage of the goods' value? Could it also be related to the type of imported goods? I’d appreciate it if someone who knows could explain it to me so I can have a better idea. Thanks!

The charging standards for import agency fees are not fixed. The common charging methods mainly include percentage-based and fixed amount.
Percentage-based charging is more common, usually around 1%-5% of the import value. The specific percentage is influenced by various factors, such as the type of goods, trade terms, and operational complexity. For common goods with simple procedures, the rate may be as low as 1% - 2%; for complex machinery products involving technical parameter reviews and other cumbersome processes, the rate may reach 3% - 5%.
Fixed amount charging is usually applied to simple and low-value import businesses, such as 1,000 - 5,000 RMB per order. Additionally, different agency companies may have different charging standards. It is recommended to consult multiple companies, such as professional agencies like Zhongshitong, and compare before making a choice.

When I imported daily necessities before, the agency company charged a 2% fee, which felt quite reasonable and not overpriced.

I once encountered a fixed fee of 3,000 RMB per order. Since the import volume was small that time, the fixed amount felt quite cost-effective.

I heard that for high-value and easy-to-handle goods, the agency fee could be as low as 0.5%, though such cases are rare.

The import region also seems to matter. Importing from Europe or America might incur slightly higher agency fees, probably due to more complex logistics.

For hazardous goods imports, due to higher operational requirements, the agency fee percentage could be much higher than for ordinary goods, possibly up to 6%.

A friend mentioned that long-term cooperation with an agency company might lead to discounts, reducing the agency fee slightly.

Some agencies also charge based on service items. For example, fees for just customs clearance would differ from those for full-process agency services.

If the goods require special inspection or quarantine, the agency fee usually increases accordingly.
