Did you know there are so many intricacies to tax refunds?
Taxation is a crucial pillar of a nation's economy, but for ordinary citizens, tax refunds also hold significant importance. A tax refund is like a "welfare return" from the government under specific circumstances. Properly claiming a refund can help fatten our wallets. Today, let’s dive into the details of how to claim tax refunds so you don’t miss out on any money you’re entitled to.
Not everyone is eligible for a tax refund. Certain conditions must be met. First, a refund arises when prepaid income tax exceeds the actual tax liability. For example, Mr. Zhang prepaid more taxes than he owed last year due to salary payments and special deductions, making him eligible for a refund.

Second, underreported or unclaimed special additional deductions may also lead to overpaid taxes and refunds. Common deductions include children's education, continuing education, major illness medical expenses, home loan interest, housing rent, and elderly support. For instance, Ms. Li paid mortgage interest last year but didn’t claim this deduction earlier. By declaring it now, she may qualify for a refund.
Step 1: Download and register on the "Individual Income Tax APP." This is the official platform for refund applications, ensuring security and authority. Follow the prompts to complete registration, log in, and update personal information.
Step 2: File an annual reconciliation. On the app’s homepage, locate the "Key Service Recommendations" section and click "Comprehensive Income Annual Reconciliation." Select the tax year and choose either "Pre-filled Declaration Service" or "Manual Entry." Most people opt for the pre-filled service, as tax authorities have already pre-populated some data based on certain rules. You only need to verify its accuracy.
Step 3: Review declaration details. Carefully check income, deductions, and special additional deductions. If errors or omissions are found, make corrections or additions. Once confirmed, click "Next," and the system will automatically calculate the refund or additional tax due.
Step 4: Apply for the refund. If the result shows a refund, click "Next," then "Submit Declaration," followed by "Apply for Refund." Select a refund bank card. If no card is linked, add one and ensure it’s active to receive the refund.
When applying, always ensure the accuracy and truthfulness of your declaration. Providing false information may lead to penalties from tax authorities or even affect your credit record. After submission, track the refund status on the app. If it shows "Tax Review Failed," revise the declaration as prompted and resubmit.
Also, note the time limits for refund applications. Each tax year has a designated window, typically from March 1 to June 30 of the following year. Missing this deadline may complicate the refund process.
Tax refunds are a legal right. By understanding the eligibility criteria and process, you can claim refunds properly and secure extra income. Follow the steps above to check if you qualify and apply promptly to safeguard your rights.
